UAE University

United Arab Emirates University was established in 1976, and is the oldest of the three government-sponsored institutions of higher learning in the United Arab Emirates compared to the Higher Colleges of Technology and Zayed University. The university is located in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. The university - in theory - upholds a strict criteria for admission to UAE nationals only, unlike other multiethnic universities in the country. In practice however, student crowds are mixed with a focus on Gulf and other Arab nationals.

Location

The university is located in the city of Al Ain, an oasis city in the Abu Dhabi emirate approximately 140 km east of the capital city.

Mission statement

United Arab Emirates University is the premier national university whose mission is to meet the educational and cultural needs of the UAE society by providing programs and services of the highest quality. It contributes to the expansion of knowledge by conducting quality research and by developing and applying modern information technology. It plays a significant role in leading cultural, social and economic development in the country.

Rankings

The United Arab Emirates University was ranked the 372nd best university in the world in the 2010 QS World University Rankings, with its life sciences programs ranked the 202nd best globally. In its capacity as a business school, UAEU was placed as the third best business school in Africa and the Middle East in the 2010 QS Global 200 Business Schools Report. In 2010, according to University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP), it is the best university in the country and 894th university in the world.

Controversy

After several years of positive academic development such as increasing international accreditation for several faculties, the recruitment of research oriented faculty, and an expansion of postgraduate degree-offerings, the planned research orientation announced by the new Provost Dr. Rory Hume seems to have run out of steam. In an article in The Chronicle  titled "Money Proves Elusive and Progress Difficult at United Arab Emirates U.", much information on the impending re-orientation can be found, with some comments below the article by the Provost and Emirati faculty.
The direction for the future of UAEU is somewhat unclear, though expectations seem mostly negative (The Chronicle forum  or DAVE's ESL ). Finally there is UAEUNIVERSITYWATCH, a recent watch site created by a collective of teaching staff concerned about the lack of clear strategic goals, erratic management, questionable academic standards as well as lack of intellectual freedom and human rights within UAE University.
